Repurposing Plastics

Farther up the Rio Grande in Taos, the city stopped recycling plastic. A group of residents, headed up by TiLT, took this as an opportunity to be innovative and started a pilot project to built an 8 x 10 structure using discarded plastic. View TiLTs Plastic Shed.

WATER NEWS

Statewide

Office of the State Engineer site has a must read document on the statewide plan for a water future. The political action bills are to carry out this mission.

350.org This site will has the action water bills. One all inclusive bill has not come out of drafting or introduced yet. Please check their site regularly for updates.

The Middle Rio Grande Water Advocate's website has the four part state initiative for governance re water form. Among other points, they propose establishing a cabinet level entity to bring together surface water, ground water, quantity and quality of water and address ongoing and future water issues.

NM Interfaith Power and Light has information on legislative, church, and community actions.

Counties

BERNALILLO
The county and Water Utility Authority are most concerned currently with getting appropriation bills passed in the legislature.

VALENCIA
Go to Valencia Water Watchers for the latest issues they are tracking on water and uses of water in their county.

SANDOVAL

The Mid Rio Grande Conservancy District is requesting funding from the legislature to repair or replace the siphon that provides irrigation water to farmers in Corrales.

SOCORRO
Save Our Bosque in Socorro County has worked on river issues since 1994. See their website for the latest.

The Great River
This book by Paul Horgan traces the history of four civilizations living along the river. It received the Pulitzer Prize in history. Horgan lived in NM for a large part of his life

Drawdown
A group of 56 global climate experts describe 100 scenerios that could cut down carbon emissions and sequester carbon and rate them as to overall effectiveness and cost. The sceneios are 2-3 pages long with photos.

Down To Earth
A very practical book on gardening in the mid Rio Grande written by gardeners in conjunction with the Extension Services.

Exploring Ancient and Enduring Uses, by William W. Dunmire. This is an easy to carry guide with excellent pictures of plants.

Tree Species Selection Guidelines for the Albuquerque Metro Area with ratings according to heat tolerance, invasiveness, need for water, etc.

The Bees In Your Backyard
A Guide to Native Bees with photos of some you might spot in your yard.

Media, Videos

Searchlight New Mexico had a recent series called "When the Well Runs Dry" by Annabella Farmer and Lindsay Fendt, highlighting the complexities and vulnerabilities of communities in the face of no information on how much water is in our aquifers.
